This Website Privacy Statement explains how AIDSVu handles the information that you provide, or that is otherwise collected, on the website AIDSVu.org.
Unless otherwise specifically noted, this Website Privacy Statement does not apply to information collected from you offline, or to third-party websites to which AIDSVu may link. You are encouraged to review the terms of the individual privacy policies of each website you visit.
How does AIDSVu collect information online?
AIDSVu collects information in two ways:
1. Passive Collection of Unidentifiable Information: AIDSVu may collect information about your visits to the website without you actively submitting such information. Unidentifiable information may be collected using various technologies, such as cookies and web beacons. Cookies are small text files that are transferred to your computer's hard disk by a website. Web beacons (also referred to as GIF files, pixels, or Internet tags) help AIDSVu recognize a unique cookie on your browser. Your Internet browser automatically transmits to AIDSVu some of this unidentifiable information, such as the URL of the website you just visited and the browser version your computer is operating. Passive information collection technologies can make your use of AIDSVu easier by allowing AIDSVu to provide better service, customize AIDSVu based on consumer preferences, compile statistics, analyze trends, and otherwise administer and improve AIDSVu. Certain features of AIDSVu may not work without use of passive information collection technologies. Information collected by these technologies cannot be used to identify you without additional identifiable information and AIDSVu will not match additional identifiable information with information collected through the use of such tracking technologies.
2. Personal Information You Submit: AIDSVu collects Personal Information in three locations. The first location is the "Contact Us" section, where users may provide feedback or ask a question. To protect your privacy, you should not provide AIDSVu with any information that is not specifically requested. If you provide this information, we will use it only to respond to your question or concern, and will not maintain a record of the information after we respond.
Personal Information is also collected on the Downloadable Maps and Resources page. When a user downloads a document or data set, the user is prompted to answer two questions regarding the user’s affiliation and the purpose of the download. Specific data which could identify the user are not collected. Responses to these questions will be used to guide future enhancements to the site and will be retained and analyzed for this purpose. A cookie may be placed on your computer so that users will only need to answer these questions for your first download.
In addition, AIDSVu offers users the opportunity to sign up to receive updates from AIDSVu about new data or resources available on the site. To sign up for updates, the user provides an email address in the “Email Sign Up” section on the site homepage. Any email addresses submitted by users will be used solely by AIDSVu to provide notification of site updates.
Personal information entered into other areas of the site – for example, to tweet about the site or to email yourself information about an HIV testing location – is not saved by AIDSVu.
