On October 15, AIDSVu recognizes National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD) by bringing attention to the impact of HIV on U.S. Hispanic/Latino populations. At the end of 2013, Hispanics/Latinos accounted for 21 percent of people living with diagnosed HIV in the U.S., despite representing only 17 percent of the national population. Additionally, for the first time since 2008, new HIV diagnoses among Hispanics/Latinos increased in 2014, with nearly 9 in 10 of those newly diagnosed being male.
To get involved in National Latino AIDS Awareness Day, you can commit to one of these actions:
- Raise Awareness – Share this infographic from AIDSVu to raise awareness about the impact of HIV in Hispanic/Latino communities using the hashtag #NLAAD.
- Get Tested – The only way to know your HIV status is to get tested. The CDC recommends that everyone ages 13-64 be tested for HIV at least once in their lifetime. Visit AIDSVu.org to find local testing centers, medical care providers, and HIV prevention services.
- Understand HIV Where You Live – Explore AIDSVu’s interactive maps at the national, state, and local levels. You can filter by different demographics, including age, race, and sex, and transmission categories for a better understanding of the epidemic in your area.
