About AIDSVu
AIDSVu empowers people to end the HIV epidemic in their communities and is a leading, free resource for visualizing the HIV epidemic in the United States. The platform visualizes data, presents insights, and catalyzes research to drive public health action across the U.S. and seeks to engage and provide users with a highly interactive and easy way to access HIV surveillance data at enhanced geographic levels. AIDSVu currently maps HIV prevalence and new diagnoses data at the state, county, and city level, including ZIP Code level for all cities. At the state and county level, we also map data on PrEP use and PrEP-to-Need Ratio (PNR), and at the state level and ZIP Code level, we map late HIV diagnoses, linkage to HIV care, receipt of HIV care, and viral HIV suppression data. HIV mortality data and HIV testing data are also mapped at the state level. All maps are available to be viewed by demographic breakdowns and can be overlaid with PrEP providers and HIV testing and treatment service locations to enable examination of these resources relative to HIV prevalence and diagnosis data at different geographic levels.
HIV Awareness Day infographics, as well as city, county, state, regional, and national profile pages, provide supplementary visualizations and information, and complement the data presented in the maps and existing surveillance reports. Other public data, such as Census data on social determinants of health (i.e. poverty, education, health insurance, etc.) can be viewed as tandem-tethered interactive maps and provide context considering social determinants of health. Downloadable resources include map images, infographic panels that can be used for presentations or other materials, and downloadable datasets. Below you can learn more about the data methods and sources for the ZIP Code data on AIDSVu. Click here for data methods and sources for state or county data.

Definitions
HIV Prevalence Data: The data reflect persons aged 13 years and older living with diagnosed HIV infection or persons living with HIV infection ever classified as stage 3 HIV (AIDS) at the end of a given year (i.e. 2022). The map title “Persons Living with HIV” has been used to encompass persons living with diagnosed HIV infection and persons living with HIV infection ever classified as stage 3 HIV (AIDS). Cases are based on most recent known address. Data are displayed as cases and rates. For the rate calculation, the numerator is the number of individuals aged 13 years and older living with diagnosed HIV infection or individuals living with HIV infection ever classified as stage 3 HIV (AIDS) at the end of a given year. The denominator is the 2020 census population aged 13 years and older.
New HIV Diagnoses Data: For the maps, the data reflect persons aged 13 years and older newly diagnosed with HIV infection, defined as a diagnosis of HIV infection regardless of the stage of disease (stage 0, 1, 2, 3 [AIDS], or unknown) and refers to all persons with a diagnosis of HIV infection during a given five-year time period (i.e. 2018-2022). The map title “Persons Newly Diagnosed with HIV” has been used to encompass persons newly diagnosed with HIV and/or AIDS. Cases are based on residence at time of diagnoses. Data are displayed as cases and rates, where rate is five-year risk. For the risk calculation, the numerator is the number of persons aged 13 years and older newly diagnosed in a given five-year time period. The denominator is the 2020 census population aged 13 years and older.
For the profiles, the data reflect persons aged 13 years and older newly diagnosed with HIV infection, defined as a diagnosis of HIV infection regardless of the stage of disease (stage 0, 1, 2, 3 [AIDS], or unknown) and refers to all persons with a diagnosis of HIV infection during a given year time period (i.e. 2022). Cases are based on residence at time of diagnoses. Data are displayed as cases and rates, where rate is one-year risk. For the risk calculation, the numerator is the number of persons aged 13 years and older newly diagnosed in a given year time period. The denominator is the 2020 census population aged 13 years and older.
Late HIV Diagnoses Data: For the maps, the data reflect persons aged 13 years and older diagnosed with HIV infection who were diagnosed with stage 3 HIV (AIDS) within 3 months of initial HIV diagnoses during a given five-year time period (i.e. 2018-2022). Cases are based on residence at time of diagnoses. Data are displayed as cases and percentages. For the percent calculation, the numerator is the number of individuals aged 13 years and older who were diagnosed with HIV during a given five-year time period and were diagnosed with stage 3 HIV (AIDS) within 3 months of initial HIV diagnoses. The denominator is the number of individuals aged 13 years and older who were newly diagnosed with HIV in that given five-year time period.
For the profiles, the data reflect persons aged 13 years and older diagnosed with HIV infection who were diagnosed with stage 3 HIV (AIDS) within 3 months of initial HIV diagnoses during a given year (i.e. 2022). Cases are based on residence at time of diagnoses. Data are displayed as cases and percentages. For the percent calculation, the numerator is the number of individuals aged 13 years and older who were diagnosed with HIV during a given year time period and were diagnosed with stage 3 HIV (AIDS) within 3 months of initial HIV diagnoses. The denominator is the number of individuals aged 13 years and older who were newly diagnosed with HIV in that given year time period.
Linkage to HIV Care Data: For the maps, the data reflect persons aged 13 years and older linked to HIV care (defined as a CD4 or HIV viral load count) within 1 month of their diagnosis, including same day linkages, during a given five-year time period (i.e. 2018-2022). Cases are based on residence at time of diagnoses. Data are displayed as cases and percentages. For the percent calculation, the numerator is the number of individuals aged 13 years and older diagnosed with HIV during a given five-year time period who had a CD4 or HIV viral load count within 1 month of their initial HIV diagnoses. The denominator is the number of individuals aged 13 years and older who were newly diagnosed with HIV in that given five-year time period.
For the profiles, the data reflect persons aged 13 years and older linked to HIV care (defined as a CD4 or HIV viral load count) within 1 month of their diagnosis, including same day linkages, during a given year (i.e. 2022). Cases are based on residence at time of diagnoses. Data are displayed as cases and percentages. For the percent calculation, the numerator is the number of individuals aged 13 years and older diagnosed with HIV during a given year time period who had a CD4 or HIV viral load count within 1 month of their initial HIV diagnoses. The denominator is the number of individuals aged 13 years and older who were newly diagnosed with HIV in that given year time period.
Receipt of HIV Care Data: The data reflect persons aged 13 years and older living with HIV who were engaged in care in a given year (i.e. 2022) (defined as at least one CD4 or HIV viral load count in that given year). Cases are based on most recent known address. Data are displayed as cases and percentages. For the percent calculation, the numerator is the number of individuals aged 13 years and older living with diagnosed HIV in a given year (diagnosed as of year-end the previous year (i.e. 2021) and alive at the end of the year (i.e. 2022)), who had at least one CD4 count or HIV viral load test in that year. The denominator is the number of individuals aged 13 years and older living with diagnosed HIV in a given year (excluding those newly diagnosed in that year) who had a least one previous CD4 or viral load test.
HIV Viral Suppression Data: The data reflect persons aged 13 years and older living with HIV whose most recently reported HIV viral load was less than 200 copies/mL in a given year (i.e. 2022). Cases are based on most recent known address. Data are displayed as cases and percentages. For the percent calculation, the numerator is the number of individuals aged 13 years and older living with HIV in a given year (diagnosed as of year-end the previous year (i.e. 2021) and alive at the end of the year (i.e. 2022)), whose most recently reported HIV viral load count was <200 copies/mL in that year. The denominator is the number of individuals aged 13 years and older living with diagnosed HIV in a given year (excluding those newly diagnosed in that year).
Mortality Data: Mortality data are displayed as rates. All-cause mortality data reflect the number of deaths in 2022 for any cause, among people with diagnosed HIV infection (including those classified as stage 3 [AIDS]), divided by the population of persons 13 years of age and older in the population. HIV-related mortality data reflect the number of deaths in 2022 that are attributable to HIV, among people with diagnosed HIV infection (including those classified as stage 3 [AIDS]), divided by the population of persons 13 years of age and older in the population.
ZIP Code Data
To permit the display of HIV prevalence and new HIV diagnoses data by ZIP Code, AIDSVu obtained a data release agreement with health departments overseeing HIV surveillance in the following jurisdictions: Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Baton Roug-e, Birmingham, Bridgeport, Charleston, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbia, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Worth, Hampton Roads, Hartford, Houston, Jackson, Jacksonville, Jersey City, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Memphis, Miami, Milwaukee, Minneapolis/St. Paul Metro Region, Mobile, Montgomery, Nashville, Newark, New Haven, New Orleans, New York City, Oakland and Alameda, Oklahoma City, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Providence, Raleigh, Richmond, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, San Juan, Seattle, St. Louis, Tampa, Tulsa, Washington, DC, and West Palm Beach. Data were obtained directly from the state or local public health departments rather than from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) because CDC does not collect street addresses for reported cases. ZIP Code-level data are not directly comparable to the state- and county-level HIV data displayed on AIDSVu because the data are not obtained directly from CDC.
Each city, county, or state public health department defined the geographic area (e.g., ZIP Codes) in their jurisdiction for which they desired to display data on AIDSVu. ZIP Code-level HIV surveillance data reflect the reported most recent known address for persons living with HIV in the defined geographic area. One-year prevalence rates and case counts and one-year receipt of HIV care and HIV viral suppression case counts and percentages were reported from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022. Five-year new HIV diagnoses case counts and risk and late HIV diagnoses and linkage to HIV care case counts and percentages were reported from January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2022. For details regarding each jurisdiction’s assignment of ZIP Codes to cases missing an address, or to cases where the ZIP Code has changed because of the redrawing of ZIP Code boundaries, see the Jurisdiction-Specific Data Caveats table below. Denominators used to calculate rates for ZIP Codes were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 census of ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs). Additional information on ZCTAs can be found here. The five-year risks for HIV new diagnoses were calculated using HIV new diagnoses between 2018-2022 as the numerator and the 2020 census population as the denominator. Rates of persons living with HIV and five-year risk for HIV diagnoses were calculated per 100,000 population to permit data standardization and comparison.
Data Caveats
Each jurisdiction chooses whether or not to map stratified HIV prevalence or new diagnoses data, map the HIV Continuum indicators (late diagnoses, linkage to care, receipt of care, and viral suppression), display a city profile, and allow their data to be downloaded. This is why the data available may differ among cities.
The HIV Continuum of Care indicators – HIV new diagnoses, late diagnoses, linkage to care, receipt of care, and viral suppression – are based on the diagnosed Continuum of Care. Only people aged 13 years or older who have been diagnosed with HIV are included. AIDSVu’s HIV Continuum of Care indicators are slightly different than the CDC’s definitions. While AIDSVu is guided by a decision-making process that included the CDC’s input, the data are separate from the CDC. Due to different restrictions and issues concerning small numbers, the definitions AIDSVu uses may slightly differ from the CDC’s definitions for the same indicators.
HIV-related mortality data is not available for all cities. Among cities where this data is available, not all conduct cause of death analyses to verify the data. Despite these limitations, AIDSVu has included this valuable data in the city profile pages for cities that were willing to share it.
In 2024, AIDSVu began using 2020 census population data (previously 2010) to calculate rates. Therefore city- and ZIP code-level prevalence and new diagnoses rates may drastically change between the 2021 and 2022 data years.
The number of transgender persons is calculated by analyzing differences between sex at birth and current gender. This method may result in potential under-reporting of the number of transgender persons reported on AIDSVu.
Data Stratification
AIDSVu allows viewers to look at ZIP Code-level HIV rates and case counts of prevalence data, five-year combined cases and five-year risk of new HIV diagnoses data, percentages and case counts of late HIV diagnoses, linkage to HIV care, receipt of HIV care, and HIV viral suppression at the overall geographic level, and by race/ethnicity, sex, and age groups. The Black and White race groups are non-Hispanic, and the Hispanic/Latino ethnicity is inclusive of all races. Sex was defined as “sex at birth.” Cases were assigned to age groups based on age at the end of 2022 for prevalence, receipt of care, and viral suppression, and age at time of initial diagnosis for new HIV diagnoses, late HIV diagnoses, and linkage to HIV care. Caution should be exercised when viewing and interpreting the ZIP Code maps because the scales change across the different demographic breakdowns.
Corrections Warning
For ZIP Codes that house correctional institutions, caution should be exercised when interpreting the data as these statistics are often inclusive of institutional populations and their inclusion may artificially inflate the rate, risk, percent, and/or case count of the population of the ZIP Code outside of the institution. To determine if a specific ZIP Code meets this criterion, place the mouse cursor over the area and, in the balloon that appears, there will be a message noting that a count or rate meets this condition, if applicable. Some cities have chosen to exclude cases from correctional facilities, some cities have chosen to include the correctional facility warning for all of their ZIP Codes, and others include incarcerated persons based on their last known or “usual” residence to avoid artificially inflating the rate in ZIP Codes that include these facilities—see Jurisdiction-Specific Data Caveats.
Data Suppression and Rate Stability
To protect the confidentiality of persons living with HIV, AIDSVu does not display rates, risks, percentages, or case counts when the numerator (number of persons living with HIV) is less than five and/or the denominator (number of people in the ZIP Code in that population group) is less than 500. ZIP Codes are noted by the color gray when one or both of these conditions are met (see hover note). Philadelphia and Phoenix are the only exceptions. The data are suppressed in Philadelphia when the numerator is less than ten (including counts of zero). The data are suppressed in Phoenix when the numerator is less than seven and greater than zero. As is standard in the display of health statistics, rates generated from a numerator less than 12 are considered unstable and should be interpreted with caution. Because rates are not displayed when the numerator is less than five, the “unstable rate” indicator will only display when the numerator is five or greater and less than 12.
Ranges/Legend Values
Range intervals were developed using the Jenks natural breaks classification method. This method groups data values into meaningful and distinct classes, with the goal of minimizing the variance within each class while maximizing the variance between classes. Zeros were excluded in the calculation of cut points for rates/risk and cases. This method is implemented each time data is updated to determine the most appropriate ranges for each map. In order to illustrate the variation in the data, ranges were developed specific to each one-way grouping (i.e., overall, by race/ethnicity, by sex, and by age group).
Caution should be exercised when viewing and interpreting different maps because the scales change across the different demographic breakdowns.
Social Determinants of Health
Social determinants of health are available as maps and their associated scales were developed using the same procedure described above. Poverty (percent of population living in poverty), high school education (percent of population aged 25 or older without a high school degree or equivalent), median household income, severe housing burden cost (percent of households [both renters and owners] who spend over 50% of their income on housing) and income inequality (measured by the Gini Coefficient, a measure of income inequality where 0 reflects complete equality and one reflects complete inequality) are available at the ZIP Code level.

Downloadable Datasets
Some cities allow for their data to be accessed via a downloadable dataset. These datasets can be found in the downloadable datasets section of the website under Tools & Resources, with City selected under Location. Contact info@aidsvu.org if additional information is needed.
Dataset Variables
The downloadable datasets may have suppressed/missing values for several reasons. Suppressed and/or missing data are represented as -1, -5, -8, or -9 in the dataset and indicate the following:
-1: Data are not shown to protect privacy because a small number of cases and/or a small population size for reasons listed in the Data Suppression and Rate Stability section.
-5: City did not authorize sharing this specific type of data.
-8: Data are undefined, for example when rate or proportion cannot be calculated because the denominator is 0.
-9: Data are unavailable.
The downloadable datasets include a rate stability variable for each indicator. As is standard in the display of health statistics, rates generated from a numerator less than 12 are considered unreliable and should be interpreted with caution.
Y: Reliable rates (i.e. those generated with a numerator of 12 or greater)
N: Unreliable rates (i.e. those generated with a numerator less than 12)
Rate stability listed as -9 when rate is unavailable, suppressed, or zero.
Please see the “Data Suppression and Rate Stability” section of the Data Methods above for specific information regarding the suppression rules and rate stability criteria.
