About AIDSVu
AIDSVu is a leading, free resource for visualizing the HIV epidemic in the United States and seeks to engage and provide users with a highly interactive and easy way to access HIV surveillance data at enhanced geographic levels. AIDSVu currently maps HIV prevalence and new diagnoses data at the state, county, and city-level, including ZIP code level for all cities and community area/ward and census tract-level for select cities. At the state level, we also map HIV mortality data and data on PrEP use. All maps are available to be viewed by demographic breakdowns and can be overlaid with PrEP providers and HIV testing and treatment service locations to enable examination of these resources relative to HIV prevalence and diagnosis data at different geographic levels.
HIV Awareness Day infographics, as well as city and state profile pages, provide supplementary visualizations and information, and complement the data presented in the maps and existing surveillance reports. Other public data, such as Census data on social determinants of health (i.e. poverty, education, health insurance, etc.) can be viewed as tandem-tethered interactive maps and provide context considering social determinants of health. Downloadable resources include map images, infographic panels that can be used for presentations or other materials, and downloadable datasets. Below you can learn more about the data methods and sources for the ZIP Code, census tract, and community area/ward data on AIDSVu. Click here for data methods and sources for state or county data.
Definitions
Prevalence Data: The data reflect persons living with HIV infection or persons living with HIV infection ever classified as stage 3 (AIDS) at the end of 2017. The map title “Persons Living with HIV” has been used to encompass persons living with HIV and persons living with HIV infection ever classified as AIDS. Cases are based on most recent known address.
New HIV Diagnoses Data: The data reflect persons newly diagnosed with HIV infection, defined as a diagnosis of HIV infection regardless of the stage of disease (stage 0, 1, 2, 3 [AIDS], or unknown) and refers to all persons with a diagnosis of HIV infection during a given five-year time period (i.e. 2013-2017). The map title “Persons Newly Diagnosed with HIV” has been used to encompass persons newly diagnosed with HIV and/or AIDS.
ZIP Code Data
To permit the display of HIV prevalence and new HIV diagnoses data by ZIP Code, AIDSVu obtained a data release agreement with health departments overseeing HIV surveillance in the following jurisdictions: Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Birmingham, Baton Rouge, Bridgeport, Charlotte, Chicago, Columbia, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Hampton Roads, Hartford, Houston, Jackson, Jacksonville, Las Vegas, Memphis, Miami, Milwaukee, Nashville, Newark, New Haven, New Orleans, New York City, Orlando, Philadelphia, Raleigh, Richmond, San Francisco, San Juan, Seattle, Tampa, Washington, DC, and West Palm Beach. Data were obtained directly from the state or local public health departments rather than from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) because CDC does not collect street addresses for reported cases. ZIP Code-level data are not directly comparable to the state- and county-level HIV data displayed on AIDSVu because the data are not obtained directly from CDC.
Each city, county, or state public health department defined the geographic area (e.g., ZIP Codes) in their jurisdiction for which they desired to display data on AIDSVu. ZIP Code-level HIV surveillance data reflect the reported most recent known address for persons living with HIV in the defined geographic area. One-year prevalence rates and case counts were reported from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2017 and five-year new HIV diagnoses case counts were reported from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2017. For details regarding each jurisdiction’s assignment of ZIP Codes to cases missing an address, or to cases where the ZIP Code has changed because of the redrawing of ZIP Code boundaries, see the Jurisdiction-Specific Data Caveats table below. Denominators used to calculate rates for ZIP Codes were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2010 census of ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs). Additional information on ZCTAs can be found here. Rates of persons living with HIV were calculated per 100,000 population to permit data standardization and comparison.
Data Stratification
AIDSVu allows viewers to look at ZIP Code-level HIV rates and case counts of prevalence data and five-year combined cases of new HIV diagnoses data at the overall geographic level, and by race/ethnicity, sex, and age groups. The Black, White, and Asian race groups are non-Hispanic, and the Hispanic/Latino ethnicity is inclusive of all races. Sex was defined as “sex at birth.” Cases were assigned to age groups based on age at the end of 2017 for prevalence and age at time of initial diagnosis for new HIV diagnoses. Caution should be exercised when viewing and interpreting the ZIP Code maps because the scales change across the different demographic breakdowns.
Corrections Warning
For ZIP Codes that house correctional institutions, caution should be exercised when interpreting the data as these statistics are inclusive of institutional populations and their inclusion may artificially inflate the rate and case count of the population of the ZIP Code outside of the institution. To determine if a specific ZIP Code meets this criterion, place the mouse cursor over the area and, in the balloon that appears, there will be a message noting that a rate meets this condition, if applicable. Some cities have chosen to include the correctional facility warning for all of their ZIP Codes and others include incarcerated persons based on their last known or “usual” residence to avoid artificially inflating the rate in ZIP Codes that include these facilities—see Jurisdiction-Specific Data Caveats.
Data Suppression and Rate Stability
To protect the confidentiality of persons living with HIV, AIDSVu does not display rates and case counts when the numerator (number of persons living with HIV) is less than five and/or the denominator (number of people in the ZIP Code in that population group) is less than 500. ZIP Codes are noted by the color white when one or both of these conditions are met (see footnote below map scale). Philadelphia and Seattle are the only exceptions where the data are suppressed when the numerator is less than six. As is standard in the display of health statistics, rates generated from a numerator less than 12 are considered unstable and should be interpreted with caution. Because rates are not displayed when the numerator is less than five, the “unstable rate” indicator will only display when the numerator is five or greater and less than 12.
Ranges/Legend Values
Range intervals were initially developed using deciles in SAS analytic software (SAS Institute, Cary, NC). Set cut points were derived using rounded deciles from the previous year, when previous year data were available. When previous year deciles were not available, rounded current year deciles were used for data new to this release. In order to illustrate the variation in the data, ranges were developed specific to each grouping (i.e., overall, by race/ethnicity, by sex, and by age group). Thus, a total of eight sets of map scales exist for prevalence (rate and count, both by overall/race/sex/age), and a total of four sets of map scales exist for new HIV diagnoses (count by overall/race/sex/age). For each scale calculation, the original deciles used to create the rounded set cut points were determined by combining the individual rates or counts for each ZIP Code and grouping into 10 equal-size groups.
Social Determinants of Health
Social determinants of health are displayed on a secondary map and their associated scales were developed using the same procedure described above. Therefore, there are four additional ranges for these data (i.e., four social determinants for overall ZIP Code level). Poverty (percent of population living in poverty), high school education (percent of population with a high school degree or equivalent), median household income, and income inequality (measured by the Gini Coefficient, a measure of income inequality where 0 reflects complete equality and 1 reflects complete inequality) are available at the ZIP Code level. The U.S. Census Bureau does not publish data for all ZIP Codes; these areas are colored white.

San Francisco, CA | Prevalence Data: Data represent persons living with HIV in the City and County of San Francisco at the end of 2017 and who were reported as of 11/01/2018. Data are mapped based on the most recent known address. All addresses were geocoded and validated against the ZIP Codes reported in eHARS. Cases with discrepant ZIP Code information were closely examined. If the street address was valid, the updated ZIP Code was assigned. Otherwise, if the street address could not be verified, the ZIP Code was left unchanged. Corrected ZIP Codes were also assigned to cases with previously missing ZIP Codes. Usual residence was determined for cases diagnosed in a correctional facility. If a usual residence could not be determined, the case would have an unknown San Francisco address because these cases were not assigned the correctional facility address at time of diagnosis; there are not inflated numbers in ZIP Codes with correctional facilities. Homeless cases are not displayed on the map. Data have not been adjusted for reporting delays.

Census Tract Data
To permit the display of census-tract-level HIV prevalence and new HIV diagnoses data, AIDSVu obtained a data release agreement with the city or state public health departments overseeing HIV surveillance in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. Data were obtained directly from the public health departments and not from CDC because CDC does not collect street addresses for reported cases, and street addresses are required for mapping at the census tract level. Census-tract-level data are not directly comparable to the state- and county-level HIV data also displayed on AIDSVu because the data are not obtained directly from CDC.
Each public health department defined the geographic area (e.g., census tracts) in their jurisdiction for which they desired to display data on AIDSVu. Census-tract-level HIV surveillance data reflect the reported most recent known address for persons living with HIV in the defined geographic area. One-year prevalence rates and case counts were reported from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2017 and five-year new HIV diagnoses case counts were reported from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2017, and are based on residence at diagnosis. For more information on how these three jurisdictions handle the assignment of a census tract to cases missing an address, see the Jurisdiction-Specific Data Caveats table below. Rates of persons living with HIV were calculated per 100,000 population to permit data standardization and comparison.
Data Stratification
AIDSVu allows viewers to look at census-tract-level HIV rate and case counts of prevalence data, five-year combined cases of new HIV diagnoses data at the overall geographic level, and by race/ethnicity, sex, and age groups. The Black and White race groups are non-Hispanic, and the Hispanic/Latinx ethnicity is inclusive of all races. Data for Asian persons are not included because of small case counts. Sex was defined as “sex at birth.” Cases were assigned to age groups based on age at the end of 2017 for prevalence and 2017 for new HIV diagnoses. Caution should be exercised when viewing and interpreting the census tract maps because the scales change across the different demographic breakdowns.
Corrections Warning
For census tracts that house correctional institutions, caution should be exercised when interpreting the data as these statistics are inclusive of institutional populations and their inclusion may artificially inflate the rate and case count of a census tract outside of the institution. To determine if a specific census tract meets this criterion, place the mouse cursor over the area and, in the balloon that appears, there will be a message noting that a rate meets this condition, if applicable.
Data Suppression and Rate Stability
To protect the confidentiality of persons living with HIV, AIDSVu does not display rates and case counts when the numerator (number of persons living with HIV) is less than five and/or the denominator (number of people in the census tract in that population group) is less than 500. Census tracts appear white when one or both of these conditions are met (see footnote below map scale). Philadelphia is the only exception where the data are suppressed when the numerator is less than six. As is standard in the display of health statistics, rates generated from a numerator less than 12 are considered unstable and should be interpreted with caution. Because rates are not displayed when the numerator is less than five, the “unstable rate” indicator will only be displayed when the numerator is five or greater, but less than 12.
Ranges/Legend Values
Range intervals were initially developed using deciles in SAS analytic software (SAS Institute, Cary, NC). Set cut points for prevalence rates and counts were derived using rounded deciles from the previous year. Ranges for new HIV diagnoses, were developed using rounded current year quintiles. For each scale calculation, the original deciles or quintiles used to create the rounded set cut points were determined by combining the individual rates or counts for each ZIP Code and grouping into 10 or five equal-size groups.
Social Determinants of Health
Social determinants of health are displayed on a secondary map and their associated scales were developed using the same procedure described above. The quartiles from the previous year were used to develop the rounded set cut points for this year. Therefore, there are four additional ranges for these data (i.e., four social determinants for overall census tract level). Poverty (percent of population living in poverty), high school education (percent of population with a high school degree or equivalent), median household income, and income inequality (measured by the Gini Coefficient, a measure of income inequality where 0 reflects complete equality and one reflects complete inequality) are available at the census tract level. The U.S. Census Bureau does not publish data for all census tracts; these areas are colored white.

Community Area/Ward Data
To permit the display of community area/ward-level HIV prevalence and new HIV diagnoses data, AIDSVu obtained a data release agreement with the public health departments overseeing HIV surveillance in Chicago and Washington, DC. In Chicago, these areas are defined as “community areas”, and in Washington, DC, they are defined as wards. Data were obtained directly from the public health departments and not from CDC because CDC does not collect street addresses for reported cases, and street addresses are required for mapping at the community area/ward level. Community area/ward-level data are not directly comparable to the state- and county-level HIV data also displayed on AIDSVu because the data are not obtained directly from CDC.
Each public health department defined the geographic area (e.g., community area/ward) in their jurisdiction for which they desired to display data on AIDSVu. Community area/ward-level HIV surveillance data reflect the reported most recent known address for persons living with HIV in the defined area. Residence at diagnosis was used for new HIV diagnoses. One-year prevalence rates and case counts were reported from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2017 and five-year new HIV diagnoses case counts were reported from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2017. For more information on how these three jurisdictions handle the assignment of a community area/ward to cases missing an address, see the Jurisdiction-Specific Data Caveats table below. Denominators used to calculate rates for community area/ward were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2010 census of census tracts that make up the defined areas in Chicago and Washington, DC.
Data Stratification
AIDSVu allows viewers to look at community area/ward-level HIV rate and case counts of prevalence data, five-year combined cases of new HIV diagnoses data at the overall geographic level, and by race/ethnicity, sex, and age groups. The Black and White race groups are non-Hispanic, and the Hispanic/Latino ethnicity is inclusive of all races. Washington, DC also includes Asian/Pacific Islander race group. Sex was defined as “sex at birth.” Cases were assigned to age groups based on age at the end of 2017 for prevalence and 2017 for new HIV diagnoses. Caution should be exercised when viewing and interpreting the community area/ward maps because the scales change across the different demographic breakdowns.
Corrections Warning
Rates of persons living with HIV were calculated per 100,000 population to permit data standardization and comparison. Ranges/Legend Values
Range intervals were initially developed by collapsing AIDSVu ZIP Code-level deciles into quintiles and are based on the combined data of all AIDSVu maps at the ZIP Code-level. Set cut points are based on these quintiles for prevalence and new diagnoses data. In order to illustrate the variation in the data, ranges were developed specific to each grouping (i.e., overall, by race/ethnicity, by sex, and by age group). Social Determinants of Health
Social determinants of health are not displayed for the community area/ward maps because they are not made available by U.S. Census at these geographical levels.
