December 1, 2025, marks the 37th World AIDS Day. This year’s theme, “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response,” highlights the impact funding cuts have had on the HIV/AIDS response and showcases the resilience of countries and communities working to protect hard-won progress and drive the HIV response forward. While we celebrate the progress made, we recognize the need for continued efforts in areas like awareness, prevention, and health equity to ensure essential HIV care, testing, prevention, and treatment services are accessible to people who need it most.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2024, there were an estimated 40.8 million people living with HIV/AIDS globally. That same year, approximately 630,000 people died from HIV-related causes, and an estimated 1.3 million people acquired HIV.
