On June 27th, AIDSVu recognizes National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) as a day to encourage people to get tested for HIV, know their status, and get linked to care and treatment.

An estimated 1.2 million people in the U.S. have HIV, and 1 in 7 people living with HIV are unaware of their status. According to CDC, over 40% of new HIV infections are transmitted by people who don’t know they have the virus, underscoring the critical importance of getting tested and knowing your status.

This year the NHTD theme is the power of “Knowing”— knowing your HIV status, risk, and options for prevention and treatment. This theme underscores the need for broader awareness of the many available services related to HIV prevention, testing, and treatment. To highlight the importance of HIV testing, AIDSVu has created a Deeper Look page.

To further understanding of testing rates across the country, AIDSVu has released new interactive maps visualizing the percent of people ever tested for HIV at the state-level in 2018 from CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS).  BRFSS is the largest continuously conducted health survey system in the world, and the data show the proportion of the U.S. population that report having ever been tested for HIV – visualizing important differences in HIV testing across states. Check out the new state-level map on HIV testing, stratified by race, sex, and age.
