New neighborhood maps are now available on AIDSVu, allowing users to view HIV prevalence in Chicago by community area and in Washington, DC at the ward level. This is the first time HIV prevalence rates have been mapped by AIDSVu at this level of detail, providing a unique look at the impact of the epidemic on a focused neighborhood level.
While people understand that cities like Chicago and DC have high rates of HIV prevalence, these new maps paint a full picture of the geographic impact of the epidemic. Comparing ZIP code and census tract maps to neighborhood-level maps offers different views of the local HIV epidemic – and both are critical in shaping our understanding, advocacy efforts, and the effective allocation of limited resources.
Users can find the new maps by locating Chicago or DC from AIDSVu’s city maps and selecting the appropriate display level on the left side above the map legend (in Chicago it is community area and in DC it is neighborhood). As with all AIDSVu maps, users can view overall HIV prevalence as well as filter by sex, race/ethnicity and age.
